115. A moment of truth

Today the Ukrainian and American officials are meeting in Switzerland to discuss the peace talks joined by the security officials from France, Britain and Germany.

Volodymyr Zelenskyy has announced a negotiating team that would meet its US counterparts, led by his chief of staff, Andriy Yermak.

As there was a heated discussions inside the Ukraine on his proposal, Donald Trump has to clarify that his Moscow-drafted “peace plan” was “not my final offer”.

However, he repeated that: “We’d like to get to peace. It should’ve happened a long time ago … we’re trying to get it ended, one way or the other we have to get it ended.”

Ukrainians have described the said proposal as a reminder of Neville Chamberlain’s 1938 Munich agreement with Adolf Hitler.

And without any doubt it was a blueprint for another Russian invasion: not only of Ukraine but of other parts of Europe as well.

I believe what some of the senators had been saying about secretary of state Marco Rubio that he had hinted the proposal was not the administration’s plan but a wish list of the Russians.

Although Rubio has said in a post that the proposal was authored by the US as a strong framework for ongoing negotiations and was based on input from both sides.

Trump has given Volodymyr Zelenskyy until Thursday to sign the 28-point document. It calls on Kyiv to give up territory it currently controls to Russia, reduce the size of its army and relinquish long-range weapons. It also rules out a European peacekeeping force and sanctions for Russian war crimes.

Zelenskyy warned his country faces an impossible choice over the coming days between keeping its national dignity and losing a major partner in the shape of the US. It faces one of the most difficult moments in its history.

Zelenskyy said dignified peace was always based on “guaranteed security and justice. Meanwhile he has also made clear he cannot give up Ukraine’s sovereignty or abandon a constitution that enshrines the country’s current borders.

Ukrainians are outraged by its amnesty for Russian war crimes. They feel it would be an insult to those hundreds of civilians executed by Russian forces.

On one side Kyiv would be forced to give up its freedom and on the other it would break off its most effective friend US - Zelenskyy has to decide.

The fighting cannot continue if the US stops intelligence sharing.

The best course of option available to him, in my opinion, is a referendum and let the people decide as only that can put some pressure on Trump team.

This is a unilateral US plan which cannot be accepted by Ukraine. It is not only the change of borders but it is horrific to even think that US is in one way dictating limitations on Ukraine’s armed forces.

How can someone dictate such terms? And who will take responsibilities for Ukraine’s safety?

This is also a big issue for EU.
