Letter From New York was a popular column published in Indian Economy & Market written by Mr. William J Dean from July 2016 to August 2020, the month he left this world. These wonderfully crafted pieces of wit and wisdom, sensitively written with a touch of humor as well as insight, provided the much-needed soothing hypnotic effect to the readers of a hardcore business magazine. 

Simone de Beauvoir once said, “There is something in the New York air that makes sleep useless.” The articles take the reader on an irresistible tour of the New York City’s high life, low life and everything in between. Mr. Dean has introduced the humane side of the great city – handholding readers to meet the squirrels in Central Park, a tour to Grand Central Terminal, Metropolitan Opera House on Broadway, Frick Collection and other art museums and lastly to basketball matches.   

WILLIAM J. DEAN as a lawyer was deeply involved in the life of the New York City. He was chairman of The New York Society Library and instrumental in the founding of the New York City Book Awards.

शायद अंतिम धड़कन मे ही कोई विजय गीत मिल जाए।" 

शायद बहुत से लोगों को यह नहीं पता होगा की यह बहुचर्चित और बेहद संदर्भित लाइनें इसी पुस्तक से ली गयी हैं. तीन भागों - अवतरण, तरुणाई और विसर्जन में विभाजित इस किताब को पहली बार 1978 में प्रकाशित किया गया था और प्रसिद्ध कवि डॉ हरिवंशराय बच्चन ने इसकी बेहद सराहना की थी. उन्हीं को समर्पित इस पुस्तक के तीसरे भाग "पीते - पीते" में निहित कवितायें उनकी क्लासिक पुस्तक "मधुशाला" से प्रभावित हैं.

संभावना की तलाश और जड़ता विरोधी कविताएँ

मनुष्य संभावनाओं पर जीता है और यह संभावनाएं हर वर्ग की अपनी-अपनी होती हैं. ऐसे ही तमाम प्रसंगों को लेकर 100 कविताओं का संग्रह है 'संभावना में बची आस्था' जो कवि, लेखक, चित्रकार, फिल्मकार और संपादक कृष्ण कुमार मिश्र का दूसरा कविता संग्रह है.

इस संग्रह में बचपन, गांव, किसान, रिश्ते, नक्सलवाद, महानगरीकरण, प्रेम, क्रांति, वामपंथ में आई मंदी और उसके कारण आदि सब कुछ समाहित हैं. आज हर जगह भीड़ व शोर शराबे और इनके बीच में ही अपने अस्तित्व को बचाने की जद्दोजेहद को लेकर संग्रह की पहली कविता 'पंख पसार' संबल देने का कार्य करती है.

पूरा विश्व मार्क्स की तमाम कल्पनाओं में एक 'अकेलेपन' (एलीनीएशन) के गिरफ्त में आता जा रहा है. कितना भी, कहीं भी भाग ले और पा लेने के बाद भी अंततः आदमी अकेला ही रह जाता है. बहुत चाहने और तमाम सामाजिक सरोकारों से जुड़े रहने के बावजूद आज का आदमी तन्हा है जिसका खूबसूरत बयान करती है कविता 'किसका समय यह'.

संग्रह में पांच भागों में बंटी कविता 'एक नक्सली का हलफिया बयान' आज के नक्सलवादी आतंक पर सार्थक टिप्पणी करती हैं. पुलिसिया कहर और उस पीड़ा से बने नक्सली के जीवन चक्र पर यह कविता एक आइने की तरह काम करती है.

कृष्ण कुमार मिश्र का यह दूसरा कविता संग्रह कहीं से भी बोझिल नहीं होने पाता. 100 कविताएं समाज के हर कोने को पकड़ने की कोशिश करती हैं. इसमे महानगरीय जीवन की भागदौड़ से लेकर समाज के अगुओं की चिंतनीय दशा का जीवंत दस्तावेज देखने को मिलता है. कुछ कविताएं अगर गुदगुदाती हैं तो कुछ रोक कर सोचने को बाध्य कर देती हैं. इस संग्रह की कविताएं परिवर्तनकामी हैं जो जड़ता का तीव्र विरोध करते हुए यथास्थिति को समाप्त करने पर जोर देती हैं, और यही परिवर्तन की कामना इन कविताओं को टकसाली नहीं बनने देती.

यह किताब नहीं मुझे जादू की पुड़िया लगी. पुड़िया भी एक नहीं सौ. किसी को खोलो तो गोला बारूद है तो किसी मे मेह बरसता है. किसी में गांव की खुशबू है तो किसी में नाखूनों पर जुएं मारती प्रेमिका चश्मे के ऊपर से झांकती नजर आती है. मुझे लगता है कि जिस शिद्दत से तुमने अपनी सोच के रिसते खून से दीवारों और छत के जरिए घर बनाया है, मैं उसमें जब तक रहा, व्याकुल रहा, गुस्सा भी आता रहा, खीझ भी. पर मुस्कराने के भी खासे मौके मिले.
