49. they could even blot out the sun
Gevorg Emin was a remarkable Armenian poet. He was raised in a family with a rural schoolteacher and initially worked on construction sites before becoming a journalist.
During World War II, he served in the army.
His first collection of poetry, Journey's Prelude, was published in 1940. He has written some highly regarded war poems, providing a firsthand account.
Here, I share one of his poems -
They desire to destroy all our bright future days.
And subdue to their bestial aims every one,
To burn everything, which for ages we praise,
And they would, if they could, even blot out the sun.
They desire in their mad, overweening pride,
That our land should no longer be lightsome and free.
My dear country! My singing, I now set aside:
From now on, a soldier of yours I shall be.
