21. We could build a future
There are many songs written to capture the mood of the time and some to encourage people fight the absurdities of the time.
“1944” is one such song.
It concerns the deportation of the Crimean Tatars, in the 1940 by the Soviet Union at the hands of Joseph Stalin. Stalin always had some pretext to justify his actions.
In this case it was their alleged collaboration with the Nazis.
Eurovision Song Contest is an international song competition organised annually by the European Broadcasting Union among its members since 1956. Each member country submits an original song representing its country to be performed and broadcast live.
In 2016 Ukraine was the winner with this song which was performed by Jamala.
The lyrics of the song was submitted in the contest in Crimean Tatar which is a Turkish language spoken in Crimea and its diasporas of Bulgaria, Romania, Uzbekistan and Turkey.
The song inspired by a Crimean Tatar folk song which describes the pain and anguish reflecting on the loss of a youth which could not be spent in homeland.
Here is the English lyrics written by the poet Art Antonyan.
When strangers are coming
They come to your house
They kill you all
And say
We′re not guilty
Not guilty
Where is your mind?
Humanity cries
You think you are gods
But everyone dies
Don't swallow my soul
Our souls...
I couldn't spend my youth there
I did not live in this place
We could build a future
Where people are free
To live and love.
The happiest time
Our time...
Where is your heart?
Humanity rise.
You think you are gods.
But everyone dies
Don′t swallow my soul
Our souls...
I couldn't spend my youth there
I did not live in this place
Amen amen.
I couldn't spend my youth there
I did not live in this place
I didn't have my counrty.
I’m not sure how much sensitivity of the song is lost in translation; however, it still captures the mood of the present time.
Only thing: Are you ready to read and think over it.
