155. This was the year that was not the year
Best known as the Poet Laureate of Twitter, British poet Paul Millicheap writes under the pseudonym Brian Bilston.
He started sharing short, humorous poems on Twitter, which gained widespread popularity and over 400,000 followers, and has been described as "The Poet Laureate of Twitter."
Bilston has published three collections of verse: You Took the Last Bus Home, Alexa, What Is There to Know About Love?, and Days Like These: An Alternative Guide to the Year in 366 Poems.
His debut novel, Diary of a Somebody, was shortlisted for the Costa Book Award in the First Novel category.
On New Year's Eve, I am sharing his poem, “This was the year that was not the year.”
The last stanza captures our honest regret as it goes - This was the year that was the year I didn’t get that much done – much the same as the year before, much like the one to come.

This was the year that was not the year
I repaired the bathroom tap
and emptied out the kitchen drawer
of a lifetime’s worth of crap.
This was the year that was not the year
in which I launched a new career.
516 A West End hit eluded me
as did Time Person of the Year.
This was the year that was not the year
I became a household name.
Action figures were not sold of me.
I wasn’t made a dame.
This was the year that was not the year
I spent less time on my phone.
Nights of passion did not happen
in boutique hotels in Rome.
This was the year that was the year
I didn’t get that much done –
much the same as the year before,
much like the one to come.
