133. Poems are made by fools like me,
I love this short poem “Tree” written by the American poet Joyce Kilmer (1886 – 1918). He was a contemporary of GK Chesterton.
This poem is published in the collection Trees and Other Poems.
Kilmer was killed by a sniper’s bullet during the WW I and died at a young age of 31.
Although his poems are dismissed as simplistic and sentimental I find them of having a deep meaning.
Here I am sharing the poem “Tree” -
I think that I shall never see
A poem lovely as a tree.
A tree whose hungry mouth is prest
Against the earth's sweet flowing breast;
A tree that looks at God all day,
And lifts her leafy arms to pray;
A tree that may in summer wear
A nest of robins in her hair;
Upon whose bosom snow has lain;
Who intimately lives with rain.
Poems are made by fools like me,
But only God can make a tree.
